The 'Locked In For Life' Pricing Promise That Didn't Need Any Special Code

The old pricing model for Build AI with AI was a mess to maintain: a one-time "Founding Lifetime" purchase sitting next to monthly and annual subscriptions. It sounded generous. It was a headache underneath.

I rebuilt it into four clean tiers.

All recurring. All with a 7-day trial. The founding tier is priced for the first wave only.

Here's the part that surprised me. The "locked in for life of membership" promise for founding members sounded like it would need real engineering: some flag on the account, a special billing path, logic to keep re-checking that a grandfathered subscriber never got bumped to a higher price. It didn't need any of that.

Stripe just keeps billing whatever price a subscription started on unless something explicitly tells it to change. The entire guarantee came down to one rule for Claude Code: never touch the price ID in the subscription webhook handler. That's it. No special case, no flag, no extra table. The absence of a change is the guarantee.

From there, the rest was ordinary build work, but each piece had to respect that one rule. Schema updates to track which tier and billing cycle each customer is on. A checkout route that checks founding spots remaining before creating a session, since that tier is capped for the first wave only and needs to stop offering itself once it's full. Webhooks that mirror subscription status, active, past due, canceled, back into the database without ever touching the price field on an existing subscription, which is the one action that would have silently broken the entire guarantee.

That's the kind of thing you only learn by building it, not by reading about it. If you're pricing your own subscription product and worried a lifetime-style guarantee will need custom logic to hold up, check whether the platform already defaults to leaving existing prices alone. It might already be doing the hard part for you.
